HIS STORY
A FRUSTRATING START
Ari started golf at 15, after years of driving past courses and wondering what it was all about. His first round was 90 for seven holes, not counting penalties, with three air swings on the first tee. A couple of shots came out of the middle, and that was enough. A year later came a first handicap of 27, the highest allowed at the time. Another year of grinding took it to 28. Not naturally talented, just determined.
THE STRUGGLE AND THE TURNING POINT
For years an awful slice survived every coach and every lesson, along with a growing belief that he simply was not cut out for it. Then Grant Field, Cameron Smith’s coach, started at the club. One conversation cleared up the poor concepts behind the slice, a small setup change followed, and the first push draw arrived two shots later. That was the moment it became clear how much good coaching matters.
BECOMING A COACH
Twenty years on, Ari coaches at the Grant Field Golf Academy with Grant still a mentor. The path was not immediate. After moving to the Gold Coast he started helping trainee professionals with their swings in casual conversation, until one of them asked why he did not coach. He trained at the PGA IGI Institute and Griffith University, completed a PGA traineeship, and has coached full time since 2016.
MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Most golfers are not swinging badly so much as trying to do the wrong thing. So the concept is fixed first, then the setup, then the backswing, by which point most transition and downswing problems have already gone. Video, TrackMan and 3D analysis back it up, and every lesson explains the cause rather than handing over a generic swing change.
A PLAYER FIRST APPROACH
Nobody is told they do not practise enough or are not athletic enough. If a golfer is not improving, the job is to find a better explanation or the missing piece holding them back. That is why improvement is guaranteed: if a player does not get better during the lesson, the sessions that follow are free until they do.
THE FUTURE OF THE COACHING
3D analysis, 3D putting and green reading technology mean problems get diagnosed and fixed faster than before. Beyond in person lessons there is the Concept Golf app, a small learning community rather than a mass platform, and golf holidays that pair coaching with great courses and good company.
